ATS software does not require every resume to be one page. Choose the shortest length that presents your relevant evidence clearly: often one page for students and early-career candidates, and up to two for experienced candidates with substantial relevant work.

Use this decision table

Student or recent graduate One page Prioritize projects and core evidence Early career One page, sometimes two Depends on relevant depth Experienced specialist Two pages Technical scope and outcomes need context Career changer One or two Keep only evidence that bridges the transition Academic or research CV Different convention Publications and research require more space

Page count is a human readability decision. Parsing risk comes from how the document is built: columns, tables, text boxes, headers, footers, images, and unusual ordering can create problems at either length.

When one page becomes harmful

Do not force one page by shrinking text, narrowing margins until the document is crowded, or deleting the evidence that proves a core requirement. A clean second page is preferable to an unreadable first page.

Cut low-value content first: an objective that repeats the title, outdated tools, irrelevant early duties, references, and generic soft-skill lists.

When two pages become padding

A second page should earn its space. Remove repeated responsibilities, long company descriptions, irrelevant certifications, and bullets that describe activity without ownership or outcome.

Put the strongest match on page one. The top third should establish target role, relevant skills, and recent evidence even if a recruiter never reaches page two.

Test the complete file

Upload the exact export and inspect extracted text. Confirm:

  • page-two content appears;
  • headings remain attached to the correct sections;
  • dates and employer names stay in order;
  • contact details are not trapped in a header;
  • no line is clipped at the page break.

Run an ATS Resume Health check after the final export. If you need to shorten the document for one posting, tailor a copy rather than deleting useful history from your master resume.

Frequently asked questions

Will ATS reject a two-page resume?

Not simply because it has two pages. Submission instructions and parsing quality matter more than a universal one-page rule.

Is 1.5 pages acceptable?

It can be, but a nearly empty second page suggests weak editing. Either use the space for relevant evidence or tighten the document.

Should page two repeat contact information?

It is optional. Do not place essential information only in a header or footer, because some parsers may handle those areas poorly.
